Anek Movie Review: ‘Who is an Indian, how is it decided?’ This dialogue of ‘Anek’ movie will make you think. ‘Anek’ confronts the ideologies of mainstream India and the separatists, which have been prevalent in different parts of the Northeast. As a filmmaker, Anubhav Sinha has been making films for many years on issues that filmmakers do not like to touch. After ‘Mulk’, ‘Article 15’ and ‘Thappad’, Anubhav Sinha is trying to draw our attention to all the states of North-East this time. These states have been plagued by separatist politics for years. The film depicts discrimination against the people here, the attitude of the government and the separatist forces and Anubhav Sinha takes us to a world about which our knowledge is limited. The film stars Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead role. Nowadays, Ayushman is an actor who is guaranteed to see something new when he comes on screen.

The story

The story of ‘Anek’ is a film based on attempts to negotiate a peace treaty in the North-East with a separatist group. This is a process that has been going on for decades without any conclusion. Joshua alias Aman (Ayushman Khurana) is an undercover agent. Which secretly prepares a parallel separatist person. In fact he has been sent there by his senior Abrar Butt (Manoj Pahwa) to create such a situation there. So that they can force the separatists to negotiate peace with the government. Its main mission is to prepare the rebel leader Tiger Sangh (Loitongbaum Dorendra) for talks. But in the process, Aman realizes that everything here is not as black and white as he had hoped. Here he has the experience of being emotionally connected not only with the issues but also with the locals and these feelings can take his mission in a different direction.

Joshua is attracted to Edo (Andrea Cavichusa). Despite the discrimination, Andrea wants to win a world boxing medal for India. When his separatist father believes that there is so much discrimination, how can he consider himself an Indian? Who will Aman support in the battle of both his duty and his feelings? Will the government’s peace talks in the North-East succeed? Can Edo win a gold medal for India? All these questions will be answered after watching the film.

Review

As a director, Anubhav Sinha has come up with a different narrative. They are constantly asking one question after another through Ayushman, an undercover agent working for the country, which makes us restless. “If the names of all the states in the North-East were removed from the map, would you be able to identify them?” This is a perplexing question. The first half of the film is a bit slow. As a director, Anubhav Sinha has presented the story in many layers through his characters in the film which depicts the local and political conflict there. The director reinforces the story of the film through regional dialect, background score, ballads and cinematography. The visual tone of the film is amazing. But now the climax can be complicated if you don’t watch the film carefully. The dialogue of the climax makes one think, ‘No one wants this piece, otherwise why this little question could not have been solved in so many years?’

Ayushman Khurana in the role of Aman alias Joshua is in the look of an angry young man. His questions about the North-East are thought provoking. Trapped in the confusion of being Hindi and Hindustani, it is fun to see Aman on screen. In this role, Ayushman Baji kills through body language, expressions and dialogues. It is a pleasure to see North-East actress Andrea in a lead role in a Bollywood film. He has very well demonstrated the discrimination he has through his aggression and the passion he has for representing India. Manoj Pahwa is also playing the role of Abrar Bhatt. Actors like Kumud Mishra, Loitongbam Dorendra and JD Chakraborty have also played their roles well.

Why watch

The film is a must watch to know the internal conflicts and socio-political issues of the North-East.
