On completion of 20 years of ‘Gadar’, the director said – ‘The scene of removing the hand pump cannot be understood by an intelligent person’.

Recalling the ‘handpump’ scene of ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’, director Anil Sharma said that there was an explosion of emotions along with the handpump in this scene. Which was symbolic. But, the intellectuals could not understand this scene because they only looked for logic in it. Everyone sitting in the theater clapped after seeing this scene.

He further said that ‘People were asking me if this is possible? I said that when Lakshmana wanted Sanjeev in Ramayana, Hanuman lifted the entire mountain. Tara Singh (Sunny Deol) may not be Hanuman but can pull off a hand pump. Many people disagreed when this hand pump scene was written. But what intellectuals don’t know is that this was an emotional outburst of sorts. People sitting in the theater were emotionally connected to this scene and applauded. Director Anil Sharma feels that ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ was not a hit because it had an India-Pakistan angle. It became a hit because it had sentiments attached to it. This was a love story.
