Janhvi Kapoor’s new film Good Luck Jerry has been released on OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar. The film is inspired by popular Tamil cinema director Nelson Dilip Kumar’s Kolamaavu Kokila. In this South film, director Siddharth Sengupta and writer Pankaj Matta have given the film a different outlook by adding the flavor of Punjab and Bihar. Will the audience like this black comedy film of Balika Vadhoo fame director or not?
Momos are from Darjeeling, Biharis are making them and Punjabis are eating them… Janhvi Kapoor’s film Good Luck Jerry starts with this dialogue. A hot family escapades are shown that many people will be able to relate to. The story begins with a momos-making aunty (Meeta Vashishth) from Bihar, who lives in Punjab with two daughters. Her husband has passed away and she is raising both daughters by selling momos. They live in a rented house. Considering the financial situation, the elder daughter Jaya Kumari, who is called as Jerry, starts working in a massage parlour. The mother does not like this job at all and the younger sister Cheri also thinks what will people say after hearing about such a job? Who will marry girls who work in massage parlors? Shekhar (Deepak Dobriyal), who lives in Jerry’s street, is in love with her. When news of Jerry’s mother’s illness comes to light, the family is torn apart. Jerry also has an insistence on being a son.
Jerry gives his life to save his mother’s life. In these difficult times he embarks on a path from which it is difficult to return. He encounters the drug mafia. He gets caught in the drug mafia’s trap. But the real twist comes when Jerry defeats the villains with ease rather than beating up like a hero. Will Jerry be able to save his mother’s life, will he be able to get out of the drug trap, all these questions will be answered in the film.
Some of Jerry’s dialogues are such that your eyes will water. The scenes between mother and daughter are very emotional. Jhwani Kapoor has done a decent job in the role of Jerry, in simple words, Jerry has done as much as was required. It seems to fit this estimate. She has also brought the Bihari touch in her dialogues well and is a huge success in terms of the film. Popular actress Nayantara played the role of Janhvi in the Tamil film. Janhvi holds her own in comparison to the legendary Nayantara, as she has not tried to copy Nayantara. You may have seen Janhvi Kapoor in a glamorous outfit on social media, but here she has slipped into character. The character of Jerry’s mother is beautifully played by Mita Vashisht. Deepak Dobriyal, Sushant Singh and Mohan Kamboj have also done very well.
Direction and Writing
Pankaj Matta, who has written several films like Chidi Balla, Lal Rang and Baarat Company, has also written this Janhvi Kapoor film. This was a big project for Pankaj and he has taken advantage of the opportunity. He has also made the audience laugh by giving light punches. A Punjab-Bihar cocktail is also served. This is Siddharth Sengupta’s first film as a director. He could have made the story stronger. The climax of the film is weak. The questions with which the story begins are not answered here.
