When Vidya Balan’s ‘Neeyat’ hit the theaters after almost four years, it was natural for the audience to expect better content, but in this case, disappointment has set in. The story begins with a fugitive billionaire businessman Ashish Kapoor (Ram Kapoor). The hi-fi businessman has fled India after taking crores in loans from Indian banks and is planning to celebrate his anniversary with his special friends on a beach in Scotland.
His close friends include best friend Sanjay Suri (Neeraj Kabi), his wife Noor Suri (Deepanita Sharma), their son, brother-in-law Jimmy (Rahul Bose), tarot card reader Zara (Nicky Walia). Lisa (Shahana Goswami), drug addict son Ryan (Shashank Arora), Ryan’s girlfriend GG (Prajakta Kohli) and niece Sasha (Ishika Mehra). He hires event manager Tanveer (Danesh Rajvi) and his secretary K (Amrita Puri) to host these guests. Amidst these friends and family of Ashish Kapoor, CBI officer Meera Rao (Vidya Balan) enters her luxurious villa on the beach and upon her arrival, everyone learns that Ashish is going to hand himself over to the Indian government through Meera and has made up his mind. is
But, the twist in the story comes when Ashish dies at his own birthday party. Zara calls it suicide, while Meera Rao believes that Ashish has been murdered. Meera starts an investigation and after that everyone present comes under suspicion.
Director Anu Menon (Anu Menon’s Neeyat) is making a murder mystery film for the first time. The strongest point of the murder mystery is its story and twists and turns, but the strong team of writers like Girvani Dhyani, Anu Menon, Advaita Kala and Priya Venkataraman prove weak in tying the story. A lot of time is spent in establishing the characters in the first half of the film. The audience’s guess work begins only after Ashish’s death and he proves to be right in his guess. That’s why guessing the story becomes a minus point of the film. His screenplay slows down the pace of the story and eventually the film becomes a detective drama. The editing is good, while cinematographer Andres Neo does a great job of building up the suspense with his excellent shots. But the background music does not contribute much to the thrill of the story.
Why should you watch this movie? – Fans of suspense and thriller films will enjoy watching Vidya Balan’s film ‘Niyat’.
