Rating: 3.5/5
Sanjay Mishra and Neena Gupta are known for their outstanding performances. Now he is being seen as a main artist from a character artist. It’s been a long journey to get here but the happy thing is, roles are being written for him now. Director Jaspal Singh’s ‘Sandhu Ki Vaad’ is one such story of an old couple where both the hero and heroine are middle-aged. Interestingly, this story is not caught in the tension of relationships. This is the story in which Shambhunath Mishra (Sanjay Mishra) stares into space and says, ‘We have not killed but killed.’ How dare a school teacher who could not sleep for three days if he slapped a student dare to cut someone’s throat with a knife? The story of Vadh revolves around this crime and thrill.
The story of ‘Slaughter’
It is said that such a thing as a perfect crime is not possible in the world of crime but the story of ‘Vadh’ is based on a foolproof plan, where the line between the perpetrator and the victim gets blurred by the end. Shambhunath Mishra is a self-respecting service retired school master. Shambhunath’s wife Manju Mishra (Neena Gupta), a lover of picturesque stories, is suffering from a knee ailment. The couple borrows a large sum of money at high interest from local gangster Prajapati Pandey (Saurabh Sachdeva) to send their son Guddu abroad for higher studies and settle there. Whenever Pandey comes for recovery, he brings liquor and meat to the house of the Brahmin family and consumes it and also calls the girls and performs Iyyashi. Trahit Shambhunath fills the bells of humiliation under compulsion. Shambhunath and his wife are facing this kind of insult on one hand and on the other the sons who have settled abroad. However, there is no peace in his life. He loves his wife, tutors the neighbours’ children but one day his patience runs out. They kill Pandey. He has no regrets for this crime. He believes that asuras are killed and Pandey was one such asura. He does this with such foolproof planning that it is almost impossible to catch him. But the twist in the story comes when a policeman (Manav Vij) and an MLA of the area (Jaspal Singh Sandhu) start searching for evidence of Pandey’s death, fearing that his pole will be exposed. Will the police and MLA find the loophole in Shambhunath’s perfect crime? Will deliver him to jail? Watch the movie to know this.
The story picks up in the second half
Director and writer Rajiv has shaped this crime-thriller in the backdrop of Gwalior. The highlight of the film is how a common man finds himself in an unusual situation and resorts to crime. The first half of the film seems a bit sluggish. The exercise of establishing characters becomes lengthy. But the story picks up in the second half. This thriller also shows the economic and social irony of the small town through the director characters. The story also has some mildly funny moments. The brutality of the dismemberment of the corpse after the murder is shown through the background music and sound, which will raise eyebrows. Sapna Narula’s cinematography is good. From the lanes of Gwalior to some historical places, he has captured the city in his camera. Also the background music is powerful. This movie will remind you of ‘Drashyam’ to some extent. At one point the story becomes a bit predictable. But eventually you will breathe a sigh of relief.
Neena Gupta poured life into the character
The film has two strong pillars of acting in the form of Neena Gupta and Sanjay Mishra. Sanjay Mishra has shown the transformation of the retired teacher from his wretchedness to his outrage. Neena Gupta has breathed life into the character of a pious woman suffering from knee pain. His behavior may remind of a private person. Their chemistry as husband and wife is amazing. Manav Vij plays the role of the police. Seeing Saurabh Sachdeva as Pandey will make you giddy and this is the beauty of his acting. Other characters have done well.
Why watch the movie?
Thriller lovers can watch ‘Vadh’ for the brilliant performances of Sanjay Mishra and Neena Gupta.
