Filmy GupShup

Like Doctor G, these doctors were also the only male students in their department, shared their interesting experiences – real life doctor g shares their experience of working as male gynecologists

Ayushmann Khurrana, Rakul Preet Singh and Shaifali Shah’s film Doctor G is currently playing in theatres. The film is being liked by people and is also performing well at the box office. The story of the film is something like that Ayushmann Khurrana’s character Doctor Uday Gupta has to become a gynecologist. This is not his primary choice. But for some reason he has to enter this field of medicine and become a Gynecologist Doctor. Our associate Ahmedabad Times spoke to some such doctors, whose experience was similar to that of Ayushmann Khurrana’s character. He also had to face the jokes of his friends in the beginning.

Dr. Manan Gupta, a gynecologist and IVF specialist working in a private hospital in Delhi, shares his experience and says, I wanted to become a plastic surgeon. But I saw that there are very few Gynec Doctors in the field and the opportunities in that field are also very good, so I chose that option. I was the only boy in the batch during post graduation. When I started college, everyone knew me and everyone supported me well. However, my family and friends were shocked to hear this decision. Many friends even joked and asked why I was going into this female dominated branch.

Rahul Manchanda, Senior Consultant and Head of Endoscopy Department at Delhi’s PSRI Hospital says, I come from a family of doctors. My mother and elder brother were also gynecologists, so they were happy with my decision. However, my friends had a slightly different reaction. Given that this is a women’s field, your entry into it is considered an unusual decision. One would be surprised if a boy takes up Home Science in school, same was the case in my case. In the past 10 years I was the only student in my college who chose this field. But I enjoyed studying, that was more important. Classmates who were mostly women were very supportive. There is some difficulty when you have to deal with patients who are a bit conservative, uncomfortable in presenting their problem. But when the patient realizes that you are there to help them and accepts your ability, then the job becomes easier.

Doctor G Movie Review: The story of the film is absolutely shocking, Ayushmann Khurrana and Shefali Shah will laugh out loud.
“Initially, I was interested in general surgery and had no interest in gynaecology,” says Dr. Bijoy Nayak of HCMCT Manipal Hospital. During the first internship I had the opportunity to work with a gynecologist and I was very impressed with him. Then I got interested in this field and decided to specialize in it. In the early days, I was the only male student in the entire department. Even my professor was shocked to see me. However, my classmates and house surgeon were very supportive. I am very comfortable in my work. A female patient is definitely hesitant when she first meets a male gynecologist, but she also gets comfortable after that.

Dr. Nakul Awasthi, a senior consultant at a hospital in Ludhiana, says that when the trailer of Doctor Ji was released, people used to send me its link. Like Ayushmann’s character, I was the only male student in the department. Everyone was asking me why I want to become a gynecologist. However, my parents never objected. My friends’ wives go to other doctors and come to me for a second opinion, but never for a check-up. Ayushmann’s character’s mother has a dialogue in the film, what will the neighbors think? My non-medical friends still laugh at me. When I was doing PG patients used to ask me where is madam. But in the last 10 years it has happened only 2-3 times when a patient has refused treatment with me. Another dialogue of the film is that, you should remove the male touch. You should try to understand the patient.

“This was my last option,” says Dr. Kishore Pandit, a consultant gynecologist at a private hospital in Pune. I wanted to be a surgeon. But now I am happy that I chose this field. My family was very positive, but my friends always told me that you will not get patients, you will have problems. But when I started practicing, I focused on laparoscopy and IVF when people don’t care much about male gynecology.
